In Canada, gun sleds were essential for moving artillery in the winter over the snow and ice. Adye, a captain in the Royal Regiment of Artillery, was the author of 'The Little Bombardier, and Pocket Gunner' (London, 1801), a widely used handbook for artillery officers. There was even an unauthorized American edition in 1810! (Parks Canada)
