Volunteer reserve cavalry force originating in England, it was recruited from small farmers of the rural middle class, called "yeomen" since the Middle Ages. Many Yeomanry units were raised in Great Britain during the Napoleonic wars and some still exist in Britain’s reserve forces. In Canada, very few militia units took the title of Yeomanry, the best known being the New Brunswick Yeomanry Cavalry formed in 1848 from existing militia cavalry troops, which has since become the 8th Canadian Hussars (Princess Louise’s).
