Caption: A skirmish at Dickinson's Landing in Upper Canada between Patriots and the Loyalist Cavalry in 1838

Dickinson's Landing was a small village in Upper Canada on the St. Lawrence River. It was at the western end of the Long Sault Rapids. Before the Cornwall canal was built in 1842, this was the limit of navigation for ships on the Great Lakes. The skirmish depicted in this 1840 lithograph is between Patriots and the Loyalist Cavalry in 1838. John Richard Coke Smyth came to Canada as drawing master to Lord Durham's family. Anne S. K.
