The massacre of August 24th and the bloody days that followed showed to the world what horrors could be committed by ‘civilized’ Christians on one another right in the city of Paris, one of the centres of western civilization. Such horrific scenes of torture and slaughter were repeated throughout England, Germany, France and other countries during the European religious wars.
