As World War II war drew to a close, members of all the armed forces of the Allies wanted nothing so much as to shed their uniforms, and fast. But there was not enough shipping available to bring Allied troops from all over the world as quickly as they wished.

Strathcona's Horse developed its own variant of a high leather boot with a sole that was intended for walking, and a laced instep that provided the wearer with greater flexibility and ease of movement for its service in South Africa. The Strathconas issued these boots to all members of the regiment, and not just to the officers.

The government created the Department of Veterans Affairs to deal with matters affecting veterans and their dependents, principally medical treatment; rehabilitation of the disabled; education; insurance; welfare; allowances, pensions and loans; and land settlement and housing. They were at their busiest in 1947 dealing with returned service people. It is still responsible for Canada's veterans.

In 1917-18 the British air force directed an ambitious flying training operation in Canada. The scheme had no precedent, but it inspired the vast British Commonwealth Air Training Plan of the Second World War, and subsequent training programs in Canada for aircrew from nations of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization that continue to the present day. During the South African War, apart from the 2nd (Special Service) Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment of Infantry, all Canadian units that served in South Africa wore Stetsons. The hat became firmly identified with Canada and the Canadian military presence in South Africa.
